Wesak and the Full Moon in Scorpio

Updated: May 12

The Wesak full moon, also known as the "Vesak" or "Buddha Purnima" full moon, is a significant spiritual and cultural event celebrated primarily in Buddhist traditions. It commemorates three important events in the life of Gautama Buddha: his birth, his enlightenment (Buddhahood), and his passing away (Parinirvana).

It takes place on the full moon day in May (or occasionally in late April), following the lunar calendar. This period is regarded as a time of increased spiritual energy and contemplation, honouring the Buddha's teachings and his impact on humanity. It is celebrated in numerous countries, particularly in Asia, through rituals, prayers, meditation, and acts of kindness. The Wesak full moon is viewed as a moment when blessings from the Buddha are thought to be generously bestowed upon those with spiritual inclinations.

In some spiritual traditions outside of Buddhism, Wesak is also seen as a time of planetary healing and transformation, symbolizing the unity of human consciousness.

Significance and Symbolism:

Wesak marks the commemoration of three pivotal events in the life of Siddhartha Gautama, who became the Buddha:

  • Birth: The Buddha was born as Prince Siddhartha in Lumbini (modern-day Nepal).

  • Enlightenment: He attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India.

  • Parinirvana (Passing Away): He passed into Nirvana at Kusinagara (modern-day Kushinagar, India).

Wesak is celebrated on the full moon day of the lunar month of Vesakha (usually in May), as it is believed that all three events occurred on the same full moon day.

Spiritual Significance:

For Buddhists and spiritual practitioners around the globe, Wesak is a time to recommit to the Buddha's teachings (Dharma) and to the practice of compassion, mindfulness, and wisdom. It is thought that on this day, the Buddha’s blessings are more plentiful, marking it as a favourable time for spiritual endeavours. The Wesak full moon is commonly viewed as a day to cultivate harmony, encourage peace, and partake in acts of kindness and charity.

Celebrations Around the World:

Wesak is celebrated differently across various cultures and countries, reflecting local traditions and interpretations of Buddhism:

a. Sri Lanka:

  • Decorations: Homes and streets are adorned with lanterns and flags.

  • Temples: People visit temples to offer flowers, light oil lamps, and meditate.

  • Dana (Giving): Offering food and alms to monks is a common practice.

  • Dansalas: Free food stalls are set up to serve anyone, reflecting generosity.

b. Thailand:

  • Processions: Monks lead candlelit processions around temples.

  • Merit-Making: People participate in rituals like bathing Buddha statues and giving alms.

  • Meditation and Chanting: Devotees spend time reflecting on the Buddha’s teachings.

c. Nepal:

  • Birthplace Celebrations: Lumbini, the Buddha’s birthplace, hosts grand ceremonies.

  • Buddhist Rituals: Monks recite scriptures and devotees offer incense and flowers.

d. Myanmar:

  • Offerings to Monks: People give food and other essentials to monks.

  • Temple Activities: Buddha images are washed as a purification ritual.

e. Western Countries:

  • Multicultural Events: Diverse Buddhist communities come together for meditation sessions, prayers, and cultural performances.

  • Interfaith Dialogues: Some centers use Wesak to promote peace and unity among different religious groups.

Modern Spiritual Interpretations:

In addition to traditional Buddhist practices, some spiritual communities around the globe view the Wesak full moon as an opportunity for group meditations aimed at channeling positive energy into the world, reflecting on personal development, and aligning one's life with spiritual principles.

In Buddhism, the full moon holds symbolic importance as it represents illumination, completeness, and the fullness of spiritual insight. The bright, clear moonlight on Wesak night is seen as a metaphor for enlightenment itself.

The Wesak Full Moon generally happens when the Sun is in Taurus and the Moon is in Scorpio. Consequently, the Wesak celebration often coincides with the Scorpio Full Moon.

Scorpio is a sign linked with transformation, rebirth, and profound emotional insight. It symbolizes the transition from darkness to light, akin to the Buddha’s path to enlightenment. The Taurus-Scorpio axis highlights the balance between material stability (Taurus) and profound, transformative spirituality (Scorpio), reflecting the Buddha’s journey from princely luxury to spiritual awakening.

Spiritual Perspective

In esoteric and spiritual traditions, the Wesak Full Moon is regarded as a period of heightened spiritual energy, where the barrier between the physical and spiritual realms is at its thinnest. Many believe that during this period, the Buddha’s spirit returns to Earth to bless humanity, and those who meditate and align themselves spiritually can receive these blessings more deeply. Meditation groups and spiritual communities worldwide conduct Wesak ceremonies, often outdoors, under the full moon, to connect with the powerful transformative energy. This time is seen as potent for inner purification, releasing past emotional burdens, and setting intentions for personal and spiritual growth.

Full Moon in Scorpio 12 May 2025

The Full Moon at 22° Scorpio directly opposes the Sun at 22° Taurus, highlighting the contrast between the quest for stability (Taurus) and the drive for transformation (Scorpio). This alignment creates a dynamic tension between holding on to comfort and embracing profound change. The Moon’s opposition to Uranus introduces an element of unpredictability, potentially sparking sudden emotional insights or unexpected changes in relationships and personal situations.

Additionally, a harmonious trine between the Moon and Saturn in Pisces offers a stabilizing influence, promoting emotional maturity and the development of healthy boundaries. This grounding energy supports thoughtful reflection amidst the Full Moon’s intensity.

The trine between Venus and Mars brings a harmonious blend of passion and affection, fostering balance in romantic and creative pursuits. This aspect enhances the potential for expressive and cooperative interactions, allowing feelings to be conveyed with both warmth and dynamism.

Further enriching the cosmic landscape, the Moon’s Nodes (North Node in Pisces and South Node in Virgo) form a trine/sextile to the Moon, emphasizing karmic alignments and destined emotional developments. This alignment supports moving forward while reconciling past patterns, offering a sense of soul growth and emotional evolution. However, Jupiter’s square to the Nodes can amplify feelings of restlessness or uncertainty regarding the right path, challenging one to align personal beliefs with spiritual growth.

Lastly, the sextile between Pluto and Neptune creates a subtle but profound undercurrent of spiritual transformation. This aspect enhances intuitive perception and the desire to merge personal power (Pluto) with higher ideals (Neptune), encouraging a deepened sense of purpose and connection to the collective consciousness.

This intricate blend of planetary influences makes this Full Moon a powerful opportunity for transformation, reflection, and conscious realignment.

While all signs are influenced by this Full Moon (especially if you have planets, Ascendant or Midheaven in 22° of Fixed Signs), Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) may feel its effects more intensely, experiencing challenges that prompt significant personal growth.

  • Scorpio: A period of self-reflection, leading to personal breakthroughs and a renewed sense of purpose.

  • Taurus: Potential shifts in relationships, urging a balance between personal needs and those of others.

  • Leo: Challenges in home and family life may arise, prompting reevaluation of personal foundations.

  • Aquarius: Career and public image may undergo transformation, encouraging authenticity and innovation .

Ideally during the full moon or when the moonlight is visible.

    1. Sit comfortably, either indoors or outdoors where you can see the moon.

    2. Close your eyes and take a few deep, calming breaths.

    3. Visualize a beam of moonlight entering your crown chakra, filling your body with pure, calming energy.

    4. Imagine this light cleansing your emotional and spiritual being, dissolving fears, resentments, and old patterns.

    5. Allow the moonlight to flow into your heart centre, expanding outward to envelop your entire being.

    6. End with gratitude, acknowledging the moon’s transformative power.

b. Buddha Blessing Meditation

To receive the blessings of the Buddha during the Wesak energy influx.

    1. Sit in a meditative posture and visualize yourself in a peaceful valley surrounded by mountains.

    2. Imagine a brilliant golden light descending from the sky, symbolizing the Buddha’s presence.

    3. Visualize the Buddha appearing in the light, blessing you and the entire world with peace, compassion, and enlightenment.

    4. Silently repeat a mantra, such as:

      • "Om Mani Padme Hum" (for compassion)

      • "Namo Buddhaya" (homage to the Buddha)

    5. Feel the blessings flowing into your heart, transforming sorrow into serenity.

c. Release and Rebirth Meditation (Scorpio Energy)

To embrace transformation and let go of past burdens.

    1. Sit comfortably and focus on your breath.

    2. Reflect on any emotional baggage or old patterns you wish to release.

    3. Imagine these patterns as dark smoke gathered in your solar plexus.

    4. On each exhale, visualize the smoke leaving your body, dissolving into the earth.

    5. On each inhale, imagine drawing in light from the moon, filling the void left by the released energy.

    6. Affirm silently:

      • "I release what no longer serves me. I am transformed and renewed."

    7. Conclude by imagining yourself reborn, lighter and more aligned with your higher self.

3. Concluding the Meditation:

  • Gratitude and Grounding:

    • Place your hands on your heart and give thanks to the Buddha, the moon, and the transformative energy of Wesak.

    • Ground yourself by eating a small piece of fruit or drinking water, symbolizing the nurturing Taurus energy.

Additional Practices:

Participate in or organize a group meditation to strengthen the shared intention for healing and worldwide peace. Engage in acts of compassion, as taught by the Buddha, such as providing food to those in need or offering prayers for them. Since Scorpio is a water sign, you can imbue a bowl of water with positive intentions and use it to bless yourself or your altar.

Blessed Wesak!
